Gangotri is located in Uttarkashi & is one amongst the Char Dham pilgrimage

It is the highest and most significant temple dedicated to the River Ganga, who is revered as a Goddess in India

It is believed to be the spot where the goddess descended to Earth from heaven in response to the penance of King Bhagiratha 

The holy river originates at Gaumukh, which is located in the Gangotri glacier and is reachable by a 19 km trek from Gangotri

Gangotri is also starting point of many popular treks like Tapovan, Gangotri Glacier,Gaumukh

The easiest way to reach Gangotri is to take the NH94 to Uttarkashi, and then follow the Uttarkashi-Gangotri Road. 

The temple is located 3,145 metres (10,319 ft) above sea level.

Gangotri is part of the Gangotri National Park that was established in 1989 

Gangotri temple is believed to have been relocated from its original location due to the shifting course of the Bhagirathi River 

Gangotri temple opens on Akshay Tritiya in the month of April/May & the kapaat closes during Diwali
