We call ourselves Travel Freaks…
Many of us are aware of the place Kargil that became quite popular, especially after the 1999 Kargil War between India and Pakistan. However, many are unaware of a special day termed “Kargil Vijay Diwas“.
Let’s take you through this blog where we would share a few key points about this place. The first thing that we would like to focus on is……
1. Background
Every year, on the 26th of July, “Kargil Vijay Diwas” is celebrated. India pays homage and tribute to the Indian Army that participated in the Kargil War. We feel privileged and, at the same time, proud of our army. Despite all odds, our soldiers persevered in the high-altitude war in 1999 and attained a memorable victory over our neighbours. This blog post highlights the importance of the day our armed forces emerged victorious.
Now that we let you know a little bit of an introduction, let’s share a brief story about the…….
2. Kargil Conflict
The conflict was mainly triggered by the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers and militants into the Kargil sector of the then-state of Jammu and Kashmir. The infiltration occurred during the summer of 1999 and changed the complexion of history between India and Pakistan. Operation Vijay, launched in May 1999, to recapture the high-altitude positions in the Kargil region that had been occupied by Pakistani intruders. Thus began the two-month-long battle in the high terrain. When one of the soldiers elaborated on the story, we could see the zeal and the pride in his eyes.
This war was considered one of the most fascinating wars in World History. The reason was the challenging conditions that the soldiers faced. Indian soldiers sustained the harshest weather conditions that one could ever imagine and recaptured the strategic peaks the infiltrators had occupied. The victory was possible only due to the martyrdom of numerous Bravehearts and the indomitable spirit of the Indian Army.
Now that you have a brief idea about the Kargil War, let’s share a glimpse of the…….
3. Importance of Kargil Vijay Diwas
Kargil Vijay Diwas is as important as Dussehra in India. Just like Dussehra is considered a victory of good over evil. Similarly, Kargil Vijay Diwas is also considered a victory of good over evil or bravery over adversity. It’s a day to salute the soldiers for their sacrifices and honour those who defend the country’s border.
There are celebrations throughout the country in many ways, including wreath-laying ceremonies, parades, and various events to commemorate the soldiers’ valour. We were quite fortunate to experience one such ceremony while travelling in and around Delhi.
Nevertheless, an eye for an eye is never a solution, so the big question is…..
4. What are the lessons learned from the Kargil War?
We agree that the war has left a lot of scars in the families of many bravehearts. However, the war has also highlighted the importance of being vigilant and be prepared for any sort of infiltration round the year. There is no doubt of the fact that the war has left all the Indians like us united. We feel that we should extend our whole hearted support to all the soldiers serving the nation.
As we said, an eye for an eye is never a solution for every conflict, there are definitely needs for diplomacy, conflict resolution, and a commitment to peace.
Apart from the lessons, the war has also left a…….
5. Legacy of the Kargil War
The war left a long lasting impact on the lives of Kargil district and its citizens. The war had brought intense hardships and suffering to the region. Despite all the sufferings, the local people presented an extraordinary resilience. The local people even displayed unwavering support for the Indian armed forces during the conflict, often providing many crucial information and assistance. The adverse situation had united the armed forces and the locals.
The war has spurred investments in infrastructure development, healthcare facilities, and education in the region, thereby improving the quality of life for local residents.
